The First World War begain in 1914, but the United States of America entered the war much later on, in 1917. It allied itself with the British Empire, Kingdom of Italy, the French Republic and the Russian Empire. These countries were fighting the war against a rival alliance of countries called the "Central Powers" - this included the German Empire, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the Kingdom of Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire.
Personally he didn't fight in WWI, but the Empire he reigned over fought the "Central Powers" which were made up of Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, and the Ottoman Empire.
