One end of it has a piston on it and the other end bolts to the crankshaft.
the number one piston is on the left of you when facing the vehicle, it is the right side or passenger side and it must be at TDC for timing settings. (FENIX)
No need to when disassembling.
On any GM block, the number one piston will always the first front one on the driver side closest to the head light. Hope this helps.
