North Vietnam wanted to conquer the south. They did.
Divide and conquer
Divide and Conquer
If you are talking about Julius Caesar, that was Gaul north of the Roman province of Gallia Narbonensis (also called by the Romans Transalpine Gaul) in today's southern France. It included most of today's France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Holland south of the River Rhine, and Germany west of the Rhine.
The goal of the South was to exist as an independent nation, so if it didn't defeat the North, but simply got to exist as an independent country...it won. The goal of the North was to conquer the South. If it didn't conquer the South, then it did not accomplish it's goal...therefore it lost. This meaning applied to both the US Civil War & Vietnam War. The North WON in both wars. The South LOST in both wars.
They not only tried; but they did. That was their president, Ho Chi Minh's dream.
Julius Caesar conquered Gaul north of Gallia Narbonensis (the south and southeast of France), which was already under the Romans. This consisted of the rest of France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Holland south of the River Rhine and Germany west of the Rhine.
