Everything you're issued at the Clothing Initial Issue Point when you report for BCT or OSUT.. back in 98, that consisted of:
- Two sets of Class A/B dress trousers
- One Class A long sleeve shirt
- One Class A jacket
- Two Class B short sleeve shirts
- Four sets of Battle Dress Uniform (two temperate, two intermediate)
- Three (I think?) sets of Summer PT uniforms
- One set of Winter PT uniform
- One pair of dress shoes
- Two pairs of all leather combat boots
- Two BDU patrol caps
- One garrison cap
- Tie
- Trench jacket
- Field jacket
- One duffel bag
Probably some other things I've forgotten. The BDUs are no longer worn, and I don't know how many sets of ACU uniforms they issue now.. the black leather combat boots are also phased out.
When you get to your unit, you'll get to keep certain other items you're issued, such as:
- Polypropelene cold weather gear
- Boots (if you're issued Rocky or Matterhorn boots - you'll receive these if you go to Fort Drum - you get to keep those. You don't, however, get to keep the Vapor Barrier "Mickey Mouse" boots.
- Beret - one exclusive to elite Airborne units, now a beret is issued to everyone, thanks to General Eric Shinseki, who thought it would be cool to have a bunch of legs running around in the black beret which was formerly used by the Rangers (who now use Tan).
- Any awards you receive.
There might be a couple other things, but it's mostly limited to uniform items. Any sort of web gear, stuff of that nature that you buy on your own (such as for parade functions), you'll keep, but the Army expects most of what they issue you to be turned back in to them.
