hi there, we have a border collie at home we live in a a town house with not a lot of land. a border collie doesn't need land, all it wants in a loving family. our dog goes for run on a daily basis and loves it. so, a border collie loves to run and loves lots of land but it doesn't necessarily need it. hope this helps

You will need more patience than border collie training. Obviously, it depends on dog persistence. If bulldog wants to get some snacks, it will learn faster.

Energetic among all things. Sometimes they can be a bit mean but only without proper training. Which is another thing. Border Collies are one of the hardest dogs to train. You need to read up on all the Dummies books and Idiots Guides they are all very helpful for first time owners. Border Collies also need plenty of room to run. If you dont have a big backyard, don't get a Border Collie. Without room they go insane. Even if you walk him every day he won't have enough excercise. With all the right conditions they are the best dogs you can have. I know that to be very true. I hope this helps and that I did not discourage you from getting a Border Collie. These dogs are VERY hyperactive. If you get one, you'll need a big backyard, a large open field, or a park nearby. Their instincts are to herd, so if you have any small children, do NOT get a Border Collie. We had one when my sister was a baby and we had to get rid of her because she nipped at her. So, I'm saying this one more time, if you have small children, do NOT get a border collie. For food, feed it normal dry dog food like iams or purina dog chow. There are certain foods for certain needs, like strength, energy, shiny coat and teeth, and also a puppy formula. A few days after getting your border collie, go to the veterinarian to see if your border collie needs some shots or if they have worms (If they're a puppy they most likely have worms). You'll also need to take them on plenty of walks, get them lots of toys, and give them lots of attention. You can learn more about the breed in dog care books and you'll need to train your dog too.
How can you know when you are ready to get a border collie?
You are ready to get a Border Collie when you know you can outrun a two year old child. Border Collies are active. #1 A large Fenced in backyard is a start. I started with a half of an acre, now I have five acres just for the dogs. #2 you must have patience and time. A bag of liver treats will help with your training. #3 you will need a kennell. Unless you have a large barn or an outside house for your dog out of the elements of the weather, you will need a kennell. A Border Collie without a kennell is Border Collie who will get in trouble. My first Border Collie ate my bed posts. Now I Kennell all my Border Collies that "come into the house" until they are fully training and "out of the puppy stage." #4 puppies need plenty of chewy bones that are safe for dogs. These are reasonably inexpensive at your local grocery store. Ask your meat manager to cut you some dog bones. They are three for $2. Dog toys and frisbees are a Border Collie Favorite. Make sure you buy the KONG frisbees that last longer. #5 A leash that is strong enough to hold a dog twice their weight. Border Collies may either chew through the lead or pull so hard they break it. Leash training is necessary for all new puppies. I consider Border Collies puppies until they are 3 years old. #6 Obedience training. First train yourself. THen the dog. If you don't, the Border Collie will train you. They are so smart that you will need to be one step ahead of them at all times. Just like that two year old child, you will need to be PRO active with your Border Collie. #7 Love. Each Border Collie has a need for affection. I hold a treat in my hand, next to my eye, and I call my dog's name. Then I give them the treat. I give them a treat when they enter the kennel. I call their name when I play frisbee with them. A dog's name is important. Your relationship to the dog is important. If you think you will be gone most of the time, the Border Collie is not for you. This breed needs attention, training, love and discipline. LIke rearing a child, one must be attentive to the growing needs of this breed. I don't recommend small apartments for this breed. Occassionally you will find a Border Collie with a calm temperment. But do not leave the Collie alone in your apartment without a kennell. You may find your furniture chewed. The rule I was raised with is DO NOT kennell your dog more than 3 hours. If you need to, bring in a dog sitter to let them out for an hour to run and play and have fun once every three hours. If a dog sitter is not an option, I would not kennell the dog all day. I would not get a dog. It is not fair to the dog. Outside dogs must have a doghouse, water, and a fence. I do not recommend tethering this breed, it would be inhumane.

To correct the border Collie over her behavior, you need more time wit it, treat her well and show her care.
Are Border Collies easy to train?
Absolutely. As you probably know Border Collies are energetic and were used as herding dogs. Without proper training they can drive you crazy with their high energy (they need loads of exercise) and they can herd small children by bumping with their nose or nudging them. Border Collies are not generally snippy with children, but they don't realize how small a child is and could push a little too hard at times. Your dog must know who is boss and to listen on command. There are also special clubs around for Border Collie owners where everyone who owns a Border Collie can go for the fun, food and watch their pets run and play off that extensive energy.
How long should you walk a border collie and could you leave it alone for about 3 hours 4 to 5days a week?
Considering you want to leave your HYPERACTIVE BORDER COLLIE alone for so long, they need to burn off all that energy that you as an owner kept pent up. If you leave them that long (with out being boarded or where somone can take care of them) then you have to run,walk,jog,play and do everything you can when you come home to burn off that HYPERACTIVE BORDER COLLIE's hyperactiveness! Never leave your dog along for days at a time, only hours.
