According to archaeological and paleographic examination as well as carbon-14 tests, the Dead Sea Scrolls were written between the third century BCE and the first century CE; the majority of the texts were written in the first and second centuries CE. (Most texts discovered at Qumran were not originally composed by the Dead Sea sect. Examination and testing provide estimations of when scribes made copies of the texts; their content reveals when they were composed.) The texts were composed from the birth of the nation of Israel with the composition of the Bible; the dates of composition continue until the turn of the Common Era.
How did the Dead Sea Scrolls survive their underwater burial?
A large number of scrolls were found in the caves near Qumran, close to the Dead Sea, and they cover a whole range of spiritual and secular issues. Some of the scrolls were books from the Hebrew Bible. They do show modern scholars the wording of scriptures in pre-Christian times, but of course they were written centuries earlier, then copied and kept at Qumran for spiritual purposes. Some prescribe life in the community and penalties for disobedience. Others contain semi-historical information about the founders of the Qumran community. How have the Dead Sea Scrolls affected Judaism?
It's not clear that they have affected Judaism in any broad sense, but it is very inspiring to see the calligraphy on these 2000 year old scrolls and discover that most of it is perfectly legible to modern readers of Hebrew. It is also very confirming to see that much of the text is identifiably similar to the masoretic text that is now the accepted text of the Bible. It is not really surprising that there are variant texts preserved among the scrolls, and the fact that some of these match the Septuigant enhances the legitimacy of that ancient text, a text we know was accepted as legitimate by the Rabbis of 2000 years ago, but which differs enough from the Masoretic text to have fallen into a bit of disrepute since. The non-canonical material among the scrolls offers a fascinating window on the world of 2000 years ago, the era that gave birth to rabbinic Judaism. The frustrating thing about the scrolls is that most of them have been reduced to confetti by the ages and reassembling that confetti is a huge jigsaw puzzle.
