The event which ended the Eastern Roman Empire was the conquest of Constantinople by the Ottoman Turks in 1453. However, by then this empire had already became defunct as the Ottomans had taken over its remaining lands in the Balkan Peninsula (south-eastern Europe) between 1354 and 1430 and by then it was a so-called empire which was restricted to Constantinople and its environs.
It has to be noted that Western Roman Empire and Eastern Roman Empire are terms which have been coined by historians. The Romans did not use these terms. They just said Roman Empire. The term Romania (which was related to this empire and not the present day country) also came into use in the Middle Ages.
Historians have also coined the term Byzantine Empire to indicate the eastern part of the Roman Empire after the fall of the western part.
The term Byzantine is derived from Byzantium, the Greek city which was redeveloped, turned into the imperial capital of the eastern part of the Roman Empire and renamed Constantinople by the emperor Constantine the Great in 330. It is used to indicate the fact that not long after the fall of the west, this empire became centred on Greece and Greek in character after it lost most of its non-Greek territories. Greek replaced Latin as the official language of this empire in 620, some 150 years after the fall of the west.
