There was no one event. When the 104 men boarded the ship that became Jamestown they did no with no thought of a colony. They were sent by a joint venture compay as an investment and they were to bring back gold. Geologically Virginia does not have gold , but it did have disease, mosquitos, bad water, and swampy land. Not to mention the fact that the fort was built on land that was part of a 15,000 Native American empire. In 1620 when the 60 Pilgrims boarded the Mayflower they did go to begin a colony away from the English government that discriminated against them because they were not members of the Anglican church. Eventually, the 13 colonies formed and in the process the crown saw that there were benefits to the items grown, made, and sold for English market. It was primarily an economic decision to have the 13 colonies.
