Best Answer

The North Vietnamese Government tried to unite the country, but South Vietnam resisted. When North Vietnam sent combat troops and propagation 'cadre' into the South to persuade them to surrender, the U.S. and other allies came into the country to defend the South against Communism.

Because of popular sentiment against the war, the U.S. withdrew all troops by April, 1973 - leaving the South Vietnamese Army to fight for themselves. Within two years, Saigon (the South Vietnam capital) fell to Communist North Vietnamese forces, and the country was unified, making HaNoi in North Vietnam the nation's capital.
