Robert E Lee surrendered his Army of Northern Virginia to Ulysses S Grant at Appomattox on 9 April 1865. This event was not the actual end of the war but, since the Army of Northern Virginia was the last effective Confederate force, the surrender of smaller Confederate forces and garrisons was inevitable after Lee's surrender.

The two ironclad warships, the South's CSS Virginia and the North's USS Monitor, engaged in a naval battle "first". It was the first time two ironclads fought each other in naval history. Ironically, the CSS Virginia was a resurrected USS ship called the Merrimack that was burned during a Federal retreat from Norfolk earlier in the war. The importance was far reaching and also a short term shock event. The CSS Virginia's attack on Federal warships to support Union General McClellan's "peninsula campaign" to attack Richmond was a huge set back. The Union's wooden warships were sunk by the CSS Virginia. Now while the battle of the Monitor & Virginia was a draw, it showed the Union that ironclad warships were needed during and after the war.

Certainly many events in late 1864 and on to early 1865 led to the fall of Richmond. The capture of the Confederate capital was directly related to the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia. This event happened on April 9, 1865. The Confederate government quickly abandoned Richmond and Federal troops took the city.

When Richmond fell to the Federal army in 1865, the Confederate government travelled to Danville, Virginia. Danville was the seat of the Confederate government for only eight days, April 3-10, 1865. On April 9, 1865 Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant, bringing an end to the Civil War after four years of battle.

On May 29, 1890, Richmond, Virginia unveiled the equestrian statue of former Confederate General Robert E. Lee. The sculptor was J.A.C. Mercie. A crowd of 15,000 spectators watched the event. A parade of former Confederate soldiers, led by Lee's nephew Fitzhugh Lee marched to the place on Broad Street for the unveiling ceremony. When onlookers saw former general James Longstreet, he was cheered. Ironically, Longstreet had not been invited to the event due to the years of anti-Longstreet propaganda that had been the norm long after the end of the US Civil War. Many pro-Confederate journalists and historians had branded Longstreet as a less than 100% Southerner. Even, some said, an enemy of Lee during the war.

In late february of 1864, General Hugh Judson Kilpatrick led a cavalry force of 4,000 troops into Virginia in an effort to destroy as much track of the Virginia Central Railroad. Under his command was Colonel Ulric Dahlgren who led a group of soldiers to make a raid on Richmond Virginia. Reportedly, not only was Dahlgren set on raiding Richmond, but according to the Confederates, documents found on the body of Dalgren, killed in action, he was to try to assassinate President Jefferson Davis. and members of his cabinet. The entire raid was unproductive due to the response of Confederate cavalry forces. The extra publicity surrounding this event was that Ulric Dahlgren was the son of an US admiral. The assassination "documents" were dismissed by General Meade, General Kilpatrick and President Lincoln.
