Wounded Knee, located on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in southwestern South Dakota, was the site of 1890 conflicts between the Lakota Native American Indians and the U.S. 7th Cavalry Regiment. The conflicts resulted in the death of at least 150 Indians and 25 soldiers.

There are many events which occurred in South Dakota in 1890.

Probably the most well known event was the Massacre at Wounded Knee on December 29, 1890. US troops killed more than 250 Lakota Sioux of Chief Big Foot's band, including Chief Big Foot.


Chief Sitting Bull and 11 other tribe members were killed in an attempt to arrest Sitting Bull at his cabin on the Standing Rock reservation on December 15, 1890.


Pierre was chosen as the permanent state capital in November of 1890 although there were several failed attempts in following years to have other cities named the state capital. A temporary capitol building was built in Pierre in 1890.
