  • the sinking of the Lusitania by a German warship. sometimes they attacked ships without thinking. ( the Lusitania was a British passenger liner.)
  • March 1916 Germans attacked the Sussex (the Sussex was a french passenger ship, Americans were also on it and 80 of them died.) afterwards Woodrow Wilson declared that Germany was not to attack anymore nonmilitary ships.
  • The Zimmermann Note ( a secret telegram sent to Mexico by a German foreign minister named Arthur Zimmermann, it was then later decoded and then published by American newspapers in March 1917.In the telegram, it offered Mexico a return of territory in exchange for declaring war on the united states.
  • The American republic was outraged by this action so President Wilson asked congress to declare war on Germany. Congress declared war on April 6, 1917.
