The revolt of the Greek city-states in western Asia Minor which was part of the Persian Empire. The outcome led to Persia trying to pacify the area by incorporating the city-states of mainland Greece within the empire.

The Persian appointed tyrant of Miletus conned the Persians into joining his pillaging expedition against Naxos, but it went badly wrong, and realising the Persian governor would retaliate against him, he talked the other Greek Ionian city-states into revolting against Persia. The Persians took seven years to put the revolt down, but mainland Greek cities Eretria and Athens had embroiled themselves supporting the revolt, and Persia sent a punitive expedition against them, spreading the fighting from the Persian territory of Asia Minor int the rest of the Greek world.
