The Holocaust is the common term for the extermination and dispersal of over 90% of the Jews in Nazi Germany controlled Europe and USSR. It is estimated that over 5.7 million Jews died, and another 2 million fled. Also a large number of Jewish children were given over to be raised as Christians. The vast majority of these Jews were noncombatants. Also about 300,000 Gypsies were exterminated as part of the Holocaust. These are the 2 major ethnic groups that the Germans targeted. So altogether, more than 6 million people were killed and 2.5 million more were forced to flee from the Nazi Germany controlled parts of Germany. These refugees had great difficulty finding a refuge, even outside of Europe and so suffered greatly. Another large number died during this Exodus.

The Israelites emigrated from Canaan to Egypt because of a famine (Genesis 46). At first they were respected and were under the protection of Joseph, a powerful Israelite; but later, the Egyptians enslaved them under a pretext (Exodus ch.1), and God brought ten plagues upon Egypt (Exodus ch.7-12), in accord with an ancient promise He had made to Abraham (Genesis 15). The plagues compelled the Egyptians to permit the Israelites to leave Egypt (Exodus 12).

The Exodus from Egypt by Israelites holds a lot of importance to Judaism. It is also a pivotal event in Christianity as a religion. The Exodus from Egypt is one of Judaism's most important events. They were lead to freedom by Moses, who was chosen by God to remove the yoke of slavery from the Jewish people. However, the Giving of the Torah (shortly after the Exodus) was more important.
Some of the supernatural events in Exodus that made the Israelites aware of God's interest and care include the burning bush where God spoke to Moses, the plagues inflicted upon Egypt to secure their freedom, the parting of the Red Sea to allow their escape, and the provision of manna in the wilderness. These miracles demonstrated God's power and protection over the Israelites.
