What evidence is there of the Romans today?

There is a massive amount of archaeology. The city of Rome is the biggest archaeological site in the world (with ruins of more than one forum, temples, basilicas (public buildings) triumphal arches and columns, the Chariot Racing track, a Roman neighbourhood on the Palatine Hill, catacombs, sewers, etc.). There are the ruins of the famous Colosseum. There are ruins of Roman towns in Europe, North Africa and western Asia; ruins of Roman villas with fantastic Roman mosaics, ruins of amphitheatres, aqueducts and bathhouses, Roman roads, recovered artifacts and coins, surviving statues, frescoes, and much more. Two Roman towns (Pompeii and Herculaneum) have been preserved intact because they were covered with ash by a volcanic explosion.

Roman civilisation is one of the best documented. There is a large amount of writing by Roman historians, jurists, rhetoricians, poets, playwrights, philosophers, natural scientists, etc.

There is the fact that Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Romanian are languages derived from Latin. There is the fact that western European languages have adopted and adapted the Latin alphabet. There is the fact that until the mid-twentieth century European sculpture, architecture and literature were influenced Roman sculpture, architecture and literature and that painter often used themes from Roman mythology. There is the fact that the civil law of many modern countries is based on Roman civil law. There is the fact that the calendar we use today is a slightly modified version of the Roman calendar introduced by Julius Caesar.
