It was the British ship RMS Lusitania on a voyage from New York carrying American citizens and torpedoed of Cork in Ireland that propelled the US government to engage in WW1.
The Germans sank a British passenger ship, the RMS Lusitania, with a total death toll of over 1500. A German submarine, the U-20 did this, firing a torpedo, without warning, while submerged and unseen, which seemed extra sinister. It was more than fifty years before the British government revealed that the Lusitania had in fact illegally been carrying contraband munitions of war, millions of rounds of rifle ammunition and tons of explosives tot he British military, which would have justified the Germans in sinking her.

If you're referring to the German U-boat attack that killed 128 Americans in 1915, that was the RMS Lusitania. The ship was actually a British passenger liner (similar to RMS Titanic) that was torpedoed off the Irish coast. She exploded violently, and was supposedly carrying munitions from the United States to Great Britain.

Lusitania
The Lusitania was an ocean liner built in Clydebank, Scotland and owned by the Cunard line. On 7th May 1915, it was torpedoed by a German U-boat off the coast of Ireland and more than 1000 people drowned. This caused an international outcry, particularly in the USA, as the Lusitania was unarmed and many Americans were on board. The Germans claimed that the Lusitania was carrying arms to aid the British and this was strongly denied at the time. However, we now know that she was indeed carrying arms and therefore a legitimate target.
