Some stand out technology in ancient Rome were more geared towards engineering and a strong will to get things done. Exceptional engineering - building skills - technology can be summarized as follows but do not include all of their building skills:
A. Exceptional road building techniques. No where in the ancient world do we find a network of roads that were built to last. They had a water drainage system and the Romans realized that the paved roadways needed to have at least 3 levels of foundation. The roadway network extended to all parts of the empire. Historians estimate that the empire 51,000 miles of paved roads.
B. Bridges. The Romans wanted straight roads to speed up transportation. This meant that wherever possible they built tunnels and bridges. The bridges over rivers required hydraulic engineering to lay pilings into the water to secure the bridges.
C. Aqueducts and water systems. Aqueducts were built to bring fresh water from springs in mountain ranges. This required a high level of engineering not often seen in the ancient world. The water systems involved city sewerage systems to keep waste away from the people. The water systems including indoor Plumbing and hot and cold water public and private baths.
D. Large buildings. Monumental buildings were built all over the empire. In Rome the Colosseum ruins still remain. It is estimated that 50,000 spectators or more could be seated in it. The structure had at least 5 levels below the surface. The arena was so sophisticated that it could be flooded to have mock naval battles.
The arch was used extensively in temples, public buildings and bridges.
