Squats (and any variation of them: single leg squats, lateral squats, wide-stance squats), leg presses, and leg extensions (although these put a lot of torque on your knees, and should be avoided) are the most common and effective exercises to build quad muscles.
There are a number of exercises that assist in strengthening their quads. Some great exercises are sprints, barbell step-ups, barbell lunges, barbell squats and the leg press. More detail on each of these specific exercises can be found on the "Muscle and Strength" website.

When performing the lateral step-up, you will be using the quadriceps and knees, glutes and hips, and hamstrings. Most of the lower body will benefit from this exercise.

A leg extension exercise tests how well someone is able to work against the resistance of the leg extension machine. In the process it works four muscles in the trainer's upper thighs that are called quadriceps. The muscles that make up the quadriceps are called: Rectus Femoris, Vastus Intermedius, Vastus Lateralis and finally, Vastus Medialis. This machine is great for anyone that wants to train for any type of race or just training to be better fit.
