The area now known as Galveston was first discovered in 1528 by Spanish explorer Cabeza de Vaca. Later in 1816, French pirate Louis-Michel Aury established a presence on the island, followed by French explorer Jean Lafitte.
Galveston means "town of Gálvez". It was named by the Spanish explorer José de Evia in honor of Bernardo de Gálvez y Madrid, the Count of Gálvez.
Some of the early Spanish explorers in Louisiana were Alonso Alvarez de Pineda, who mapped the Gulf Coast in 1519, and Hernando de Soto, who explored the Mississippi River in the 1540s. Another significant explorer was Cabeza de Vaca, who was shipwrecked near present-day Galveston, Texas, and later explored inland areas, including parts of Louisiana.
