A better armored Naval Fleet that was well trained and equipped with heavier and longer ranged weapons. The battle fleet was well maintained and while it may seem strange, high quality coal was a factor since speed was a major factor that came into play in the destruction of the Spanish Caribbean Squadron. Because of budget restrictions, the crews of some Spanish warships had never fired a live round and some ships like the new Italian built Cristobal Colon did not even have its main battery installed when it went to War.

The trend setting event was Admiral Dewey's victory at Manila Bay which destroyed the Spanish Philippine Fleet. If the Caribbean fleet could be bottled up or defeated, the War was virtually over. The Spanish Army would be isolated and the Spanish Home Fleet was required to guard the Spanish home ports.

It began with the Naval victory at Manila Bay which destroyed the Spanish Fleet stationed there and effectively isolated the Philippines. They then invaded Cuba and established their forward operating base at Guantanamo Bay and they blockaded the Spanish Caribbean Fleet at Santiago. When the San Juan Hills were taken, the Spanish Squadron was forced to make a run for the open seas. It was destroyed.

The Spanish Home Fleet was required to stay in port in Europe to protect the homeland. The War was effectively over.
