The king underestimated the abilities of the American Colonists and failed to adequately supply British troops. Their tactics were also inadequate for the type of fighting that they encountered in the woods and hills of the American Colonies. The British military wanted to fight in "rank and file", as they had always done. For open fighting ground, that works well, but when the American Colonists were hiding behind every rock and tree, AND they knew the countryside far better than the British, there was almost no possibility that the King's soldiers could succeed in stopping the rebellion. The reality is, most of the colonists didn't want to cecede from the Commonwealth, but the King had decided to overtax and refused to provide anything back.
Efficient leadership by George Washington, the guerrilla war tactics followed by the Americans, the many major blunders made by the Britishers were some factors that helped America to win the war. America was also helped by Spain, France and Netherlands during the war.
Although the Americans were just poorly trained and disorganised men they fought with militia style tactics and picked off the British troops. The British also didn't use their number to advantage making it easier for the Americans as they could recover between battles.
Having George Washington as the commander of the Colonial Army was also advantageous as he was a master planner and very knowledgeable. He took on lesser roles within the army to train the men and this hands-on leadership earnt him respect and kept the army together.
French military and financial assistance: French provided weaponry and money to the Americans to beat the British.
The guerrilla warfare very much contributed to the victory. Also, the fact that the colonists had the advantage of fighting for their land.
A major contribution to the victory of the American Revolution was the US alliance with France. The Franco-American Alliance created a strong front against enemy attacks.

The American Revolution made them statesmen instead of colonists. And the French Revolution didn't greatly affect th epopulation of America, seeing as the US never got involved. And Canada had already been taken over by Britain.
