First of all, you must know the enviorment of Ancient Greece. Ancient Greece was a flood a small city states , most notably Sparta and Athens. The main reason for a army is the reason why modern countries have armies too , to help prevent an invasion from other countries or to expand your power. Sparta especially needed a great army because of their slaves , a little konow fact. Sparta's slaves , called helots, were prisoners of wars. They often revolted , which was a major problem. So, the Spartans , eager to stop this , Modeled their life around the army , mostly to prevent revolts.
