Milan in the Renaissance was a prosperous capital for industry and trade, and goods such as textiles and armour were in high demand. This wealth resulted in impressive architecture, such as the Duomo Cathedral. For most of the Renaissance, the city was ruled by the Visconti family and later the Sforza family - as the city was in a vulnerable location at the head of the peninsula, republicanism was deemed inefficient.
