It is extremely difficult to go against the majority in a country. It is difficult to go against the power in a country, whether the majority or not. Sensible Germans lived in fear of the Nazi Party and realized that aligning with it was a protection.
Anybody sensible has "a fear of war" . War is terrifying, destructive and decidedly unpleasant. Britain certainly never showed fear of war when they took on the 'mighty Luftwaffe' in the Battle of Britain and destroyed the Germans to the point where they cancelled their invasion plans.
There were multiple reasons why Germans emigrated to the US in large numbers. One significant reason was economic opportunities. Many Germans sought better economic conditions and job prospects in the US, especially during times of economic hardship in Germany.
