A commercial chick starter is best as it is very difficult to make your own balanced feed correctly. Any feed supply store can provide this "MASH"called "chick starter". To start the day old chick the fine mash is used and then a courser version of the same mash is added over a few weeks to get them used to the large feed they will eventually be given. Bugs and worms, plants etc. are fine for the chick once it starts exploring the farmyard but they should be fed the proper diet early in the morning before they wander. Just like little children they will eat the best stuff first if you let them and it is not always the best for proper nutrition. Chick starter comes in Medicated (to protect them from certain diseases ) and non medicated varieties (for the organic farmers).

chicks love oats! crush them up so its quite powdery but leave some gritt in like bits in not all powder! my little chicks absolutly loved them! or you could just give them normal chick food from stores (: hope that helped!!

∙ 12y agoChicks need a smaller grind on any feed offered. A good product to feed them is called chick starter or chick mash which is formulated for young birds.
If this is unavailable you can process or regrind adult feed into a smaller size.
