What foods do the Japanease eat?

Due to the nature of Japan's agricultural industry, fish, rice, and other seafood are major sources of nutrition. Red meats in particular are historically new to Japan as (a) cows and the like require a lot of flat grazing land, which is scarce in Japan and (b) the culture was Buddhist early on, which made meat eating inappropriate for all but the lowest social classes (leather makers, renders and handlers of the dead) (Edo period).
