Christians in general are not forbidden to eat certain types of food. God may, however, instruct one to abstain from eating or drinking certain things, such as alcohol or candy. This usually occurs only on an individual basis. During Lent, Catholics are not allowed to eat meat on Friday. This is tradition, not commanded in the Bible. Also, though Lent is primarily Catholic, anyone may celebrate it if they so choose and give something up for 40 days, symbolyzing Jesus' fast in the desert prior to being tempted

Good one, but your wrong on one point. We can drink(Wine, Champane, even some people have some scotch every now and then), we just can't get drunk on hard liquor

Right, like I said, God would do that on an individual basis...

AnswerBasically the Old Testament says they're not supposed to eat Shellfish, or any animal with a cloven hoof, No Pigs, Rabbits etc. Many believe those laws to have been overturned by the resurrection of Jesus as presented in Timothy among other places.

"...commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer." Timothy: 4:3-5

It varies depending on individual beliefs however, and example being Catholics (a Christian denomination) may eat any type of food, except on Ash Wednesday and on Fridays during Lent when they are not allowed to eat meat (excluding fish and seafood, which is not considered to be meat). This is tradition however, and not commanded in the Bible. Also, though Lent is primarily Catholic, anyone may celebrate it if they so choose and give something up for 40 days, symbolyzing Jesus' fast in the desert prior to being tempted

Leviticus11:10

And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you:

11:11

They shall be even an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, but ye shall have their carcases in abomination.

11:12

Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that shall be an abomination unto you.

and Again

3:3 Whatsoever parteth the hoof and is cloven-footed and cheweth the cud among the beasts, that shall ye eat.

3:4 Nevertheless these shall ye not eat, of those that chew the cud or of those that divide the hoof: the camel, because he cheweth the cud but divideth not the hoof, he is unclean unto you;

3:5 and the coney, because he cheweth the cud but divideth not the hoof, he is unclean unto you;

3:6 and the hare, because he cheweth the cud but divideth not the hoof, he is unclean unto you;

3:7 and the swine, though he divide the hoof and is cloven-footed, yet he cheweth not the cud, he is unclean to you.

3:8 Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcass shall ye not touch; they are unclean to you.

AnswerGood evidence, but that was directed towards ancient jews, when they still had to make blood sacrifices. Here's Peter 10:9-15 9About noon the following day as they were on their journey and approaching the city, Peter went up on the roof to pray. 10He became hungry and wanted something to eat, and while the meal was being prepared, he fell into a trance. 11He saw heaven opened and something like a large sheet being let down to earth by its four corners. 12It contained all kinds of four-footed animals, as well as reptiles of the earth and birds of the air. 13Then a voice told him, "Get up, Peter. Kill and eat."

14"Surely not, Lord!" Peter replied. "I have never eaten anything impure or unclean."

15The voice spoke to him a second time, "Do not call anything impure that God has made clean."

In response to the comment above, I looked in my NIV Bible and there is no Peter chapter 10. 1st peter goes to 5 chapters and 2nd peter 4 chapters...perhaps u mean acts 10? In that situation, again, READ THE CONTEXT! :) the dream is a specific sign to Peter that he may talk and be nice to etc with the people coming who weren't jewish. Just because someone isn't Jewish doesn't mean they aren't clean. God was explaining this to Peter.

15And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common.

God "hath cleansed" the people coming to visit him, who though be not Jews, still be of God's will to meet Peter.

This is just an example of God not being racist, that's all.

besides, the verses don't specify that it was unclean animals, may have just been Peter following the traditions and stuff. For example, read matthew chapter 15: its a matter of confusion between tradition of the pharisees and God's commands. also, jews these days believe that an animal has to be kosherly butchered and done in a certain way and certified by a rabbi etc.. perhaps that was a similar case with Peter?

25And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him.

26But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man.

27And as he talked with him, he went in, and found many that were come together.

28And he said unto them, Ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation; but God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean.

Though many people believe the Old Testament is void now, the Bible says that Jesus came to fulfill it, not to abolish it. According to Romans 11 and many other places throughout the Bible, it is stated that when one starts following God, they are grafted on to the Jewish nation, not literally in their bloodline, but spiritually. The covenant made to Abraham and his descendants is then applicable to all believers in God who have repented etc. Remember, Jesus was Jewish too! For example, why do most Christians obey all of the Ten Commandments except the one that commands us to rest on the seventh day, the Sabbath--it is in the same set of laws as murder and idolatry. Many other of God's guidelines from the Old Testament are neglected as well. It is important to be aware that God's "Old" Testament is still the covenant that exists today between those who seek God and God. The New Testament is only a fulfilling of the Old Testament--which proves it all the more true, and important to live by. Of course, you aren't gonna earn salvation through merely physically following his commands, but it helps and God will bless you for it. Besides, did Jesus himself now obey the "law"? If we are to follow his example, then, we, too must follow the law. This is all my opinion feel free to think about it yourself and it is highly encouraged to read it too. Lots of pointers to Jesus are there too. It is clearly commanded in Leviticus 11 and Deuteronomy 14 to not eat certain animals, and if people these days obey the Ten Commandments(or try to), why don't they obey the commandment of the Sabbath--on the seventh day you shall not work. Jesus's crucifixion in no way made the laws of God's covenant not valid. Jesus obeyed the Torah(the first five books of Moses, or the Old Testament, or God's word, can be taken as any of them), an so should we. Many people say, for example, that one verse that says it is not what goes into you that makes you unclean--notice the context however, that really is a debate between Jesus and the Pharisees whether it is a sin to not wash your hands before eating. Jesus therefore stated the above in order to distinguish tradition(of washing hands) and God's commands. So yeah, all those places where it seems like the New Testament is voiding other words of God, it is really just a lack of context! hope we all grow in understanding of the bible :)

in response to ""...commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer." Timothy: 4:3-5 " we have to remember back to the situation in which this was written. if u look at some of the ultra-orthodox jews these days, who are very based on actions and not really the concept of salvation, u can kind of understand this better; they are very very nitpicky and assumptive about lots of passages, thus they make traditions out to be the word of God. they are also sometimes very arrogant etc(this is just what i hear from people, im not judging) so the pharisees were too...and lots of other poeple like that, i believe, were giving the gentiles trouble, who were still somewhat new to christieanity...not very welcoming. the person who wrote the verse was saying that dont mind unreal doctrins made by man that focuses more on teh actions than the intent. this verse is also clarifying that, unlike many religions, salvation is "by grace, and not by acts, so taht no one can boast" or something like that. So....this is also an out of context verse :p lol
