Cobar, in far western New South Wales, is a very remote region, well populated by indigenous Australians, so native animals would have been common on the menu.

The town was settled by Cornish people, and in 1906, the Cornish influence was still strong. Therefore, foods commonly eaten eaten by the European settlers would have included Cornish pasties, which were savoury pastries made with turnip, potatoes, beef and onion. They also would have eaten pies and stews with meats from wild animals or domestic stock, or squab pie of apples, onions and salt pork.
