During the years leading up to World War II, the French and many others in western European nations believed that the area south of Flanders and north of the famous Maginot Line was impenetrable to offensive action by modern armies. Because of this belief, the "Ardennes Forest," which comprised most of this area, was only lightly defended when the Germans attacked it in 1940.
Germany executed a strategic military maneuver called the Manstein Plan. Instead of attacking the heavily fortified Maginot Line directly, Germany launched a surprise invasion through the Ardennes forest, which was considered to be an impenetrable natural barrier. This unexpected approach caught the French off guard, allowing the German forces to bypass the Maginot Line and rapidly advance into France.
