Nothing happens to the number of neutrons nor protons. it's just the electron number that changes. If an atom gains electrons, it increases and the ion is negative and vice versa. the number of neutrons or protons DOES NOT CHANGE.

If the number of neutrons in an atom changes what is formed?

isotope

What variant forms of an atom differing in the number of neutrons?

How many neutrons are in one atom?

The number of neutrons depends on the atom. In general, mass number = atomic number + number of neutrons.

What part of an atom forms a nucleus?

The nucleus forms the centre of the atom. The protons and neutrons are found in the nucleus of the atom.

What is the number of neutrons in an atom affects the atomic what?

The number of neutrons in an atom can affect the atomic mass of an atom.

What subatomic particles could be changed without changing which element the atom?

You are probably referring to neutrons which are often found within the nucleus of an atom in numbers different from the protons. An atom of the element carbon, for instance, normally consists of 12 protons, 12 electrons and 12 neutrons. However, an isotope of carbon known as C13 consists of 12 protons, 12 electrons and 13 neutrons.

How many neutrons does a negative oxygen ion have?

8. When an atom becomes an ion, it gains or loses electrons. The number of protons and neutrons doesn't change. If the number of neutrons changes then the atom has changed into a different isotope.

The atomic number of carbon is six therefore the number of protons in a carbon atom equals?

6. The atomic number is equal to the amount of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom. The number of electrons can change due to bonds. The number of neutrons changes only when you have an isotope.

Why doesnt the number of protons change for a single element while the neutrons and electrons can?

The protons don't change because if the number of protons changes, the type of element the atom is changes. The number of protons determine the species of the atom.

What are the three smaller forms of an atom?

An atom contain protons, neutrons and electrons.

What is the total amount of protons and neutrons in an atom?

The total amount of protons and neutrons in an atom is its mass number.
