General rule of thumb is pressure check fuel hose from tank to carburetor if you can do that. There should be no leaks. Also check tank vent. Next would be the carb, then after that make sure the engine is sealed and has no air leaks. If engine has air leaks it will run bad regardless of position. You didn't say what model the saw is. Check your Stihl dealer. Some carbs have come DOWN in price substantially for newer saws.

Mixing ratio for an 041 stihl chainsaw?
Hi _ I have an 041 AV which I love. The guy I bought it off ran it on about 1:40 with the Stihl 2 stroke oil. He says 1:50 like the weedeaters was too lean. I came across the original factory specs which list it as 1:20 but I think that is when oils weren't as good as today. I tend to go anywhere between 1:30-1:40 depending on my mood. If summer heat I run more oil than in winter. Hope that helps.

No, the perfect fuel/air ratio is 14.6 to 1. A ratio of 13 to 1 is a safe ratio for most non turbo gas engines. Turbo engines can run a 12 to 1 ratio. Chrysler's lean burn system of the 70's and 80's used a ratio of around 18 to 1 and it was horrible. No gasoline engine can run at 30 to 1.

Replace the head gasket with a thicker one, this would lower the compression ratio.
How do you choke a chainsaw?
Depends on the saw... On a Stihl chainsaw there is a four position switch. Top position is OFF, second position is RUN/IDLE, third position is HALF CHOKE and the last position is FULL CHOKE. Hold the throttle in with your finger and move the switch down with your thumb. DO NOT try to move the switch down into choke WITHOUT holding in the throttle. On a Husqvarna chainsaw there is normally a switch that you pull out towards you. However, there have been models made that you have to push a switch downwards.
