An army general is the highest ranking officer in the british army. His role is to manage and command the entire army. His work is purely "paper" based and does not take part in any front line combat.

His role also involves advising his boss ( the prime minister ) in times of war or conflict.

Generals fall into different types.

1 Star

2 Star

3 Star

4 Star

As you said army general im guessing you were refering to the highest ranking general which is a 4 star.

The President acts as the Head of the Military who gets the final say. However in terms of the military itself, the Chief of Staff is the leader and it is currently General Raymond T. Odierno.

That would be the Chief of Staff of the Army, who is at a minimum of a four-star General. The position is currently held by GEN George W. Casey, Jr. In certain wartime scenarios, this position will be a 5-star post; however, this has not occurred since the end of WW2.
