What explains the observation that when a continental and oceanic plate collide the oceanic plate dives down under the continental plate?

The oceanic plate must be more dense than the continental plate for this to happen.

Convergent boundaries can be divided into 3 categories what are these categories and what geological feature are created by each?

The categories are a continental and a continental plate colliding, continental and oceanic plates colliding, and oceanic and oceanic plates colliding. The two continental plates form mountains. The continental and oceanic plated colliding cause subduction zones and volcanoes. Oceanic and oceanic plates colliding form a trench.

What geological process occurs at a oceanic continental plate boundary?

Mid ocean ridges occur

Is Japan continental continental oceanic oceanic or continental oceanic?

Oceanic-Oceanic.

What 3 types of convergent boundaries exist?

Oceanic-Continental, Oceanic-Oceanic, and Continental-Continental.

What boundary is a syncline in?

Syncline folds are found in Convergent boundaries. (Oceanic - Oceanic, Continental-Continental, Oceanic-Continental)

What are the three sub-types of convergent plate boundaries?

Is the Pacific plate and oceanic plate or continental plate?

It is oceanic

Convergence can occur between what types of plates?

1. oceanic-continental 2. oceanic-oceanic 3. continental-continental

Compare and contrast the three plate boundaries?

Oceanic-continental convergence (when an oceanic plate meets a continental plate) & oceanic-oceanic convergence (2 oceanic plates) both involve oceanic plates & subduction. Continental-continental convergence (2 continental plates) involves neither.

Examples of where the three types of plate movements occur?

Continental- continental collisions, Continental-oceanic collisions,and Oceanic-oceanic collisions

What geological features are caused by a subduction?

When a plate is subducted under another the geological feature depends what type of plate boundary it is. If it is two oceanic plates then the subduction causes Island Arcs to be formed as well as a trenches. When a oceanic plate is subducted under a continental plate then a trench is again formed just off the shore of the continental plate and fold mountains are created as the continental plate is forced upwards and the friction melts the oceanic plate into magma which then rises (as it is less dense than surrounding magma) and forms volcanos.
