This depends on how you are feeding them, cows can eat various foods like, grass, weeds etc that grow in the paddocks, they can be fed hay made from oats or wheat. They can be in a feedlot, so say 100 cows in an area of 100metre by 100metres. They are then fed what is called a ration, this is normally wheat and or barley with lupins and then mixed with straw made from barley or wheat. These cows then grow very quickly and are sold as grain fed beef compared to grass fed beef. Some farmers feed there cattle on, carrots, turnips, potatoes, if they can find bulk amounts that are cheap. Really the cow is fairly versatile. Some farmers also use hormones, which some people are scared of but they are good because they prevent the animal laying down as much fat and which means they putt on more muscle, so ithey are a leaner animal and therefore better for the consumer in terms of health (doesn't always taste as good though with less fat!)
