You can get iodine mainly from iodized salt, seafood and dark green vegetables such as kelp, kale and spinach. While your body only needs a small amount of iodine, not getting enough can lead to impaired physical and mental development in children, and poor thyroid development.
Cretinism is a condition of severely stunted physical and mental growth due to untreated congenital deficiency of thyroid hormones (hypothyroidism). The term cretin refers to a person so affected1.1. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cretinism
Cretinism is a condition of hypothyroidism during fetal life, infancy, and childhood. Characteristics include both severe stunted body growth and mental retardation. It is caused by a deficiency of Iodine, lack of a thyroid gland, or inability of the thyroid gland to produce enough hormones that are crucial to the development of a child. Cretinism can be prevented in one way by adding iodine into the persons diet.
They are not. They are called cretins. Cretinism is a condition of severely stunted physical growth and mental development due to untreated congenital deficiency of thyroid hormones.
Mental development refers to the process of enhancing cognitive abilities such as critical thinking, problem-solving, memory, and decision-making skills. It involves expanding knowledge, acquiring new skills, and improving overall mental functioning through learning and experiences.
Iodine is used to produce the hormones thyroxin and tri-iodothyroxin in the thyroid. With iodine deficiency the body can no longer produce these hormones. These hormones are controlled by negative feedback, meaning that these hormones decrease their own production in the thryoid. So without thyroxin and tri-iodothyroxin there is no longer a signal to stop production by the thyroid and therefore the thyroid goes into overdrive while the body loses its thyroid hormones. This results in a goiter(enlargment of thyroid) and HYPOthyroidism(look up symptoms on wikipedia). Iodine deficiency is extremely rare in all developed nations because we add iodine to salt. Hope that helps.
