In my opinion I would not believe him. If he was able to betray her trust and keep it a secret, only coming clean when confronted with it, then of course he is going to spout some stuff to try to save face. Maybe he is telling the truth this time, but I would never believe him, or be able to forgive him, it would be over for me.
