Giuseppe Mazzini led the romantic republican nationalism movement in Italy after the failure of nationalist uprisings in Italy in 1821. He brought new fervor to the cause of the unification of Italy, even declaring that "Nationality is the role assigned by God to a people in the work of humanity." He founded the Young Italy Society, a secret society to promote Italian unity, in 1831 with the goal to drive Austria from the peninsula and establish an Italian republic. Mazzini believed that a unified Italy would be created through a popular uprising and spark a European-wide revolutionary movement. As a result, he led insurrections during the 1830s and 1840s and was involved in the ill-fated Roman Republic of 1849 where he was the "triumvir" and leader of the new republic's government until he was defeated by the French troops called by the Pope. Yet Mazzini was so dedicated to the unification of Italy that he continued to conduct guerrilla warfare throughout the 1850s despite his time in exile and jail and numerous failed insurrections in hopes of unifying Italy. He also founded the Friends of Italy in 1850 in London to attract consensus toward the cause of Italian liberty and helped to sign a manifesto against the Piedmont and French alliance in 1859, which led to the Second War of Italian Independence and the liberation of Lombardy. Despite that success, Mazzini never gave up his dream of uniting all of Italy as he again tried to free Rome in 1862 and to free Sicily in 1870. Though not always successful, Mazzini's passion, perseverance, and dedication to Italian unification made him an integral figure who helped to work toward the unification of Italy.
