Succulent plants such as cacti, aloe, and houseleeks can often do well in desert climates because of the way they use water. Succulents hold lots of water in their leaves and therefore can go long periods of time without water. They also usually do not develop huge root systems like most plants because of the nature in which they use water. A plant such as aloe or cactus can often grow very well with only a very small watering every few weeks to a month during the active growing season. Also be aware that most plants can utilize the moisture in the air. The dew in the morning can be enough water to keep many plants alive, even without rainfall.
