In mountainous areas there are flat spots and steep spots throughout. In the flat spots or less steep areas, people cultivate crops. Grapes grow on hillsides throughout Italy and Germany. Mountains aren't solid rock until you get to the very top. When the altitude is high enough (above the tree line) very little will grow (wild or cultivated).
It depends which mountain your taking about. I'm sure food grows on the top of Mt Everest. I am sure food could grow on a mountain after all how can some animals eat. Then again they could be herbivors that eat plants instead.
