If the MAF sensor is clearly wrong, then the computer will calculate a substitute value and it will turn on the MIL indicator on the dash. If it is partially wrong, the MIL might not indicate, but performance will suffer. To test it, you will need a scan tool and the proper diagnostic procedures. See the shop manual. Do not just replace the MAF sensor unless you have proved that the computer or the wiring is not At Fault, otherwise you might damage the new part.

This error is from the "transmission module", it usually points to a bad speed sensor. The Mazda 3 has a speed sensor in the rear of the transmission, it is located under the battery box, near the ground in the lower part of the tranny near the firewall (attached with one bolt and a plugin/harness, super easy). The other one is a "pulse sensor" and is located on the top of the tranny. I am wrestling with this exact error message myself on my 2004 Mazda 3. So bear in mind that what I am telling you pertains to a 2004 Mazda 3, 2.3 liter engine. Good Luck!
Just going on the information you've provided in the question, it's doubtful that the engine light is the cause of the deceleration. It's more likely that the light is correctly indicating the presence of whatever malfunction in the engine is causing the deceleration, and the engine malfunction is what you need to identify. Your local Mazda dealer or friendly mechanic are the best choices.
