The hematocrit calculates the percentage of red blood cells in the plasma. The term hematocrit means to separate blood. Brain hemorrhage is caused by an artery in the brain bursting and causing bleeding in surrounding tissues. A hematocrit that is done immediately after a hemorrhage does not show any signs of RBC loss because at the time of the hemorrhage, plasma and red blood cells are lost in equal proportions.

Why is the hematocrit decreased in pregnant women?

Hematocrit is the proportion of blood volume that is occupied by red blood cells. For man it is normally about 46%, for women 38%. If a pregnant woman has an abnormally low volume of red blood cells, this may need further medical investigation and attention, as it may indicate internal bleeding or hemorrhage.

What happens during hemorrhage?

Hemorrhage is essentially the loss of blood, very quickly. This can happen inside or outside of the human body and most of the time it happens quick.

Can a blood transfusion be caused by childbirth?

What change would you expect to happen in the hematocrit of a person who is dehydrated?

Hematocrit is a measure of the % of blood occupied by the Red Blood Cells (RBC) which carry oxygen. In the short term the hematocrit is affected by the % of water in the body, so if the person becomes dehydrated there is relatively less water than cells, so the haematocrit goes up.

Is hematocrit test used for clotting?

Not precisely. It is a means for testing vascular leakage. It is a measure of packed cell volume in the blood. Upon hemorrhage or edema, fluid leaks from the blood vessels (capillaries) and hence creates a scenario of higher cellular content in the blood which is read out using a centrifugal blood packing assay. The higher the hematocrit, the higher the fluid loss into surrounding tissues. The classical clotting time assay is usually a fibrin/fibrinogen activation and/or measure.
