The electoral college vote ended in a tie between Thomas Jefferson and his running mate Aaron Burr. This tie vote sent the election to the House of Representatives to decide. One might have expected Burr to resign his claim, but he saw his chance to be President and the foes of Jefferson saw their chance to cause trouble and maybe gain some concessions from the new administration by brokering their vote. Eventually, Jefferson was elected President and Burr made vice-president. the 12th amendment was soon added to the Constitution to prevent this kind of fiasco from happening again.
