Best Answer

Offa built his Dyke.

Offa, King of Mercia from 757 to 796, one of the ancient kingdoms of Britain, built a long earthwork consisting of a double bank with a ditch between, about 27 metres wide and 8m deep at its largest point (described at the time as a 'dyke') to prevent the Welsh from attacking him. It was begun in around 785 but fell into disuse not very long afterwards. Parts remain to be viewed but much can now only be detected through Archaeology. It was reputed to have run from 'sea to sea' according to Asser, one of the great chroniclers of the age.
