Bishop Island was created in the early 1900's with dredge spoil from the new channel cutting for entry to the Brisbane river. the cutting was made by the dredge Hercules, commanded by captain Bishop after whom the man made island was named. As a numberof old ships and barges were beached there to counter erosion ,the island also became known as wreck Island. After many years as a tourist destination for day trippers on hayles cruisers & serving as a signal station for the Port of Brisbane the Island became a victim of progress. The expansion of the Port of Brisbane saw the island incorperated into the Fishermans Island complex & it is now only a memory. If you look across the river to the port complex from the green entrance beacon to the Cooper Channel, that would mark approximately the centre of the island Great memories of top fishing & tougher but simpler times. Vale,Bishop Island.
