Jericho was an extremely ancient city and archaeologists have found remnants of walls from different periods, one above the other, as the mound, or tell, grew higher.

The last pre-Israelite walls fell down around 1500 BCE, probably as the result of an earthquake, and the city was abandoned. There is no evidence in this period, of major conflict or military occuptation.

The Bible says that during the Hebrew period, Hiel the Bethelite rebuilt Jericho and sacrificed his firstborn son, Abiram, in the city foundation and his youngest son, Segub, in the city gate.
