1981 was the year in which a non-communist trade union, known as the Solidarity movement challenged the iron-fisted Communist bureaucracy. The movement was led by Lech Walesa, and resulted in strikes in the port of Gdansk, Poland, and the communist backlash, when the government declared martial law. Eventually, the communist government was forced to negotiate with the union.
