Murphy married twice. First to Wanda Hendrix (November 3, 1928 - February 1, 1981). The two were together less than a year. The marriage was negatively impacted by Murphy's Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. She had appeared in a few movies when Murphy saw her on a magazine cover and asked to be introduced. They were married in 1949 and divorced in 1951. She had a hard time finding good roles afterward, and in a few years remarried and largely retired from acting, though she made occasional appearances in television shows such as "My Three Sons" and "Bewitched". Her two marriages subsequent to Murphy both ended in divorce before she died of double pneumonia at age 52 in 1981.
Murphy then married Pamela Archer, an airline stewardess who had been an army nurse. Pamela was the mother of his two sons. This marriage endured until Murphy's death in 1971. Pamela made one TV movie in 1981 and appeared in several episodes of TV shows as herself as recently as 2007.
