There was no singular "Islamic Empire" throughout the entirety of this period. From 750-1038, there was slow progress as the numerous Christian States pushed the Umayyad Emirate/Caliphate of Cordoba back to the southern half of the Iberian peninsula. Then the empire, without an heir, fractured into over 50 different "Taifa" Kingdoms, each occupying a very small area. This resulted in several advances by the Christian Kingdoms. This was repelled by two Moroccan Empires (the Almoravids and Almohads) who, in sequence, conquered all of the Taifas and pushed back into Christian Spanish territory. The fall of the Almohads returned southern Iberia to Taifas, which the Christian Spaniards overran, with the exception of the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada, which was allowed to survive for over two centuries more, before it too was conquered.
