What happened to the Joker's face in Batman?

The Joker's face was disfigured due to the bullet ricocheting and severing the nerves in his cheeks. When the "plastic surgery" was performed, it was not performed with the correct instruments, leaving the "grin" and turning the Joker insane when he looked into a handheld mirror. Thus, the Joker was born.

Before he was the Joker he was the red hood and Batman was chasing him and he fell into a vat of chemicals which bleached his skin and turned his hair green.

In the comic book storyline "Death of the Family," the Joker's face was surgically removed by Dollmaker. Joker later wears his own face like a mask and undergoes surgery to reattach it. However, in later storylines, such as "Endgame," his face is revealed to have been fully healed.

As far as I know the Joker did not paint his face. There are various origins stories due to the longevity of comics but the changes of societal thinking and writers. Most origin stores maintain that he fell in acid during a crime spree and that scarred his face like that. He cut his face around his mouth to cause the constant "red smile" grin-like scar. This is maintained by the 2nd new movie of this decade/century, but I do not know about the comic's stance on that. Other origin stories have different situations. Look up Joker's Origin Story or why does the Joker have "whatever you think you should say" if I didn't give you enough to work with.

The Joker mainly wears a purple suit because HE FEELS LIKE IT . The Joker doesn't need a reason for the things he does . . he just does them . :)
