From my understanding Cro-Magnon did not die off. We are the modern version of the Cro-Magnon. Cro-Magnon's are Homo sapiens.

No-one really sure why the Neanderthals, a parallel species living alongside our own, died out, but many palaeontologists suggest Homo Sapiensis (us!) and H. Neanderthaliswere close enough to interbreed, giving us even now DNA traces of the Neanderthals. The two probably thought of each other as just... people of slightly different appearance!
